To many, traveling may seem captivating and venturesome, but very few like to talk about what happens, or in this case, what doesn’t happen behind closed (bathroom) doors. I know some of you already know what I’m about to talk about.. and no it isn’t the mile high club. I’m talking about the “number 2” club. That’s right! We’re talking about constipation and digestion while traveling!
It’s no secret that one of the biggest downfalls to traveling are the suppressed bowel movements that seem to stay behind at home while you go off waunderlusting. Those of you who know me, already know how open I am with talking about my digestive health. It’s no secret that it’s one of my favorite topics to talk about (and also probably the reason why I’m still single..). I can vouch and say that these next few things have worked wonders for me in my, almost, three years of travel. So take a seat (pun intended) and enjoy these next couple of tips!
Warning: after trying these at home (or while traveling) you may need a toilet close by.
Tip #1
Warm water w/lemon first thing in the morning.
Before even having anything to eat in the morning, if I’m feeling a little backed up, I drink an 8oz glass of warm water with lemon. Give it a couple minutes to settle, then make yourself comfortable on the throne.
Tip #2
Intake more fruits/veggies for fiber.
Now if you’re anything like me, you probably despise all green veggies. (Sorry, I don’t eat my pet’s food).. So my solution is to blend them in a smoothie so that I don’t even know they’re there. Perfect veggies for any smoothie: spinach, kale, etc..
Tip #3
For those of you who despise fruits/veggies..
Fiber Well gummies. Now I blame my sweet tooth for this one, but I swear these delicious gelatin gifts from God work the best. Warning: Don’t eat more than the recommended dosage.. trust me. They can be found at your local Walmart or Target for around $9.
Tip #4
Avoid foods that might back you up.
Red meat, carbs, dairy.. basically anything delicious. On travel days try to stay away from fried foods high in fat and focus on a having a light meal instead. Yogurt, whole grains, bananas are all perfect examples of what you could eat. (By travel days, I mean days you’ll be on a plane. Once you get to your destination, go food crazy. Please.)
Tip #5
Stay hydrated during flight!
This is probably the most important tip. I know many of you like to drink it up while flying, but be sure for every one alcoholic beverage you have, you’re drinking one full glass of water.
Tip #6
Warning: for emergencies only.
Take a shot! Of olive oil that is. I know it sounds crazy, but olive oil makes stools softer and the inside of the bowel smoother. Think of it as Drano Max Gel Clog Remover..
